…I did….
Chromedome groaned as he slowly unclosed his optics, his focus slowly returning.
What had happened? The mnemo-surgeon tried to regain his consciousness. His senses slowly returned to him, as was the throbbing pain in his head.
He remembered, Rewind, Overlord, he remembered his loss, his arm. Subconsciously the mnemo-surgeon reached for his arm, which to his surprise was there.
His visor widened in surprise as he groped the upper arm harder. The pain, it had been real, very real, but the arm was there.
As Rewind had, had offered himself to draw out the sword. As he had doomed himself, sacrificed himself to safe them all from the hideous monster. And then Chromedome remembered how it was him who offered to kill him. A mercy kill. He slumped down onto the ground of the med-bay.
His head sunk low between his bend knees as he pressed his forehead to the ground, his hand making dents into the arm he was grasping, “Rewind,…” he whispered the name of the minibot, before he tried to borrow himself deeper into the ground as if wanting it to swallow him whole and make him disappear, dissolve into nothingness.
Chromedome sighed as the door closed behind him with a swoosh. The room was dark as he sunk down on his recharge slab.
His life was meaningless and filled with pain, the only release was in his hand, He looked at the innocent looking gun. Well, guns never looked innocent, he looked at the resting gun in his hand.
The only thing he needed to do was to aim at his head and hit his brain-module and the pain was finally over, forever.
No more pain, no more suffering, sweet nothingness.
He thought about Blaster for a moment, about what they had talked about. The other had tried to talk to him, but his mind was already made up.
Air was escaping his vents as he put the gun on his head and pulled the trigger slowly, he felt the metal of the gun barrel heat up and finally the bullet started to penetrate his helmet and burrow itself deep into it.
The mnemosurgeon fell back on his slab energon dripping out of the wound in his head, dropping on the floor. The gun escaped his hand and fell down too, painted pink by his energon.
“He was, but you were still a very important mech to him.” Blaster said as he pulled away. He looked Chromedome in the optics, even though they were hidden behind the visor, and tried to smile for both of their sakes. “You helped him remember why it’s so important to have someone to trust and love when all seems so dark and bleak.”
Chromedome let his arms fall to the side and balled his hands into fists, “I helped him?” he looked away from Blaster.
“I didn’t help him Blaster, I was just standing there not being able to do anything.”, dark thoughts clouded his mind.
Chromedome had been useless, he had just been there to watch Rewind fade away, slowly.
He should have faded away with him. It should have been him that slowly lost his mind his memories and all the pain.
Even though Chromedome knew how selfish it was, to have been in Rewinds place and to have Rewind where he was now.
Alone.
Without hesitation, Blaster stepped forward and hugged Chromedome. He had known how much the mnemosurgeon meant to Rewind and had been happy they were together. But to see how distraught Chromedome was now… The communications officer had been plagued with nightmares while feeling Rewind’s pain and he had a good grip on what was going on.
“It’s never going to get better unless you talk to others.” He said soothingly. “Don’t give up on his memory.”
Chromedome was a little taken aback at being suddenly hugged close to the communications officer chest.
He awkwardly put his hands on Blasters shoulders.
“I understand, Blaster.” he sighed, “Rewind- I’m sure he was as important to you as he was to me.”. As close as he and Rewind had been, they would have never felt the same deep bond. If anything Chromedome was inferior to Blaster regarding his connection with Rewind.
